U.S has new neighbors: Meet the Beckham Family.
|
|
The Beckhams brought Los Angeles International airport to a standstill as they arrived in their new home country late Thursday.
Becks, hailed “the saviour of US soccer” was greeted with his wife by the largest US airport crowd to welcome a star in decades.
Walking out of a windy LAX airport at around 8:15 p.m. towards an SUV with tinted windows, the couple – sans sons Brooklyn, 8, Romeo, 4, and Cruz, 2, whom Victoria has said she doesn't want photographed – sashayed past hordes of media and fans held back by metal barriers.
He was welcomed to the LA Galaxy football club in a bizarre ceremony at the team's ground in Carson, California.
More than 600 journalists and Five thousand ecstatic fans turned out to greet him — many chanting “There’s only one David Beckham” for David's press conference last Friday, in which he was formally introduced as the newest player on the L.A. Galaxy soccer team. "He will be putting on the L.A. Galaxy shirt for the first time, although it will be a few days before he hits the field in a game," said a team insider.
The former England captain was forced to make an uncomfortable speech to the crowd of fans and media. Showing off his No 23 shirt, he said: "For me, the most important thing in my life is my family. The second thing is the foot . . . is the soccer. I will get used to that at some point, I’m sorry.”
He went on: “This is one of the biggest challenges I have ever taken on in my career. To move to a different country, the other side of the world, is something I am looking forward to. Potentially in the States soccer could be as big as it is everywhere else. And I am very proud to be part of that.”
Paying tribute to his three sons and wife Posh, who wore a pink outfit for the unveiling, Becks said: “Now my family has moved to Los Angeles, something we are looking forward to and something we are very proud of, and in our life everything’s perfect.”
Ex-Manchester United midfielder Becks will win over his new team-mates by throwing a lavish barbecue at his £11million Beverly Hills mansion.
He said: “It’s important to get to know the players and for Victoria to know the players’ wives.”
Proud Posh said she may never return to the UK after falling in love with America.
And she raved about the welcome the pair received. She said: “I don’t reckon we will leave. We just think it is a great place to raise children.
“Everyone is positive and patriotic and I think those are great qualities to give out to kids.” She said of the airport welcome: “It was incredible. We didn’t expect it. Everyone was so kind.”
